University-student tutor — what they cost
$45–$85/hr typical range. Median around $60/hr.
Who fits this tier
Currently studying at university; usually a recent high-achiever in the subject (e.g., a 99+ ATAR student tutoring Year 11–12). Best value for foundation work and student-relatable peer mentoring.
What you should expect for the rate
- Comfortable explaining material at student-relatable level
- Recent personal experience of the exam or syllabus
- Limited classroom or behavioural experience
- Strong availability for short engagements
When this tier is the right choice
Use Tier 1 for foundation work, catch-up, study skills, and student-relatable peer mentoring. A 99+ ATAR uni student tutoring Year 11–12 in their own specialty subject can be excellent value — they remember the exam, they speak the same language as the student, they cost half a registered teacher. Where Tier 1 falls down: behaviour management for younger primary kids (Tier 3 is better) and the top-band stretch for ATAR (Tier 4 is better).
Negotiating around the typical rate
- If you're at the bottom of this band: ask about specific qualifications (current uni transcript, recent ATAR for Tier 1; teaching registration number for Tier 3) and trial lessons before committing.
- If you're paying at the top of this band: ask for outcomes — what did their last 3 students achieve in this subject? If they can't tell you, they're charging Tier 4 prices for Tier 2 work.
- Bulk-pack discount: most independent tutors at this tier will discount 5–10% for a 10-lesson term pack paid up front. Worth asking.
See the rate estimator for a specific subject × city × tier × delivery combo, or by subject for how subject complexity moves the band.
