Tutor rates by city
Tutor density and household income drive city premiums. Sydney sits at the top, regional at the bottom, with a ~25-point spread.
| City / region | Vs national avg | Sample Tier 2 rate |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | +12% | $90/hr |
| Melbourne | +8% | $85/hr |
| Brisbane | -3% | $80/hr |
| Perth | -5% | $75/hr |
| Adelaide | -8% | $75/hr |
| Canberra | +5% | $85/hr |
| Hobart | -10% | $70/hr |
| Regional | -15% | $70/hr |
Why Sydney pays the most
Two reinforcing forces: (a) household income in Sydney's eastern + north shore + inner-west belts is materially above the national median, and (b) the supply pool of tutors is constrained by accommodation costs — being a working tutor in Sydney is harder than being one in Adelaide because the rent gap exceeds the rate gap.
The Sydney premium is concentrated at Tier 3 and Tier 4 (registered teachers and specialists) — for Tier 1 uni-student tutors, the city gap is smaller because uni students are everywhere.
Why regional pays less
Smaller tutor pool, lower household-income median, and historically more reliance on in-school tutoring than private. The 15% discount disappears for online-only tutors — if you live regional and book an online tutor based in Melbourne, you pay the Melbourne rate.
Where the city premiums come from
These percentages are inferred from (a) Tutorfinder's regional tutor counts (Sydney has roughly 1.0× tutor supply per capita; Adelaide has roughly 0.7×) and (b) household-income variance across AU capitals. They are indicative. We will replace these with directly-measured city distributions as our first-party survey dataset grows past 200 submissions per city.
The city premium applies to in-person tutoring. For online tutoring, where the tutor is matters less than where they were trained. A Sydney-based online tutor charges Sydney rates; a Hobart-based online tutor often charges below Sydney rates for the same qualification. Online buyers in Sydney effectively get to choose from the entire national supply pool — a meaningful discount over local in-person.
