38 terms parents trip on when navigating private tutoring, ATAR scaling, and the senior secondary system in Australia.

ATARAustralian Tertiary Admission Rank
A rank between 0.00 and 99.95 that tells universities a student's percentile position in their Year-12 cohort. The ATAR is a rank, not a score — it does not measure how well a student knows the material; it measures where they sit relative to other students.
Scaling
The process by which raw subject marks are adjusted to allow fair comparison across subjects with different candidatures. A strong mark in a subject taken by academically stronger students gets scaled up; a strong mark in a subject taken by mixed-strength students may not be.
Study scoreVCE
A 0–50 score VCAA awards for each VCE Unit 3+4 study. The cohort median is approximately 30. VTAC scales study scores when calculating the ATAR.
Scaled score
A study score (VIC) or course mark (NSW) after the relevant tertiary admissions centre has scaled it for the ATAR calculation. Different from the score reported on the student's transcript.
Aggregate
The sum of a student's scaled scores used to determine the ATAR. In VIC: top 4 scaled scores plus 10% increments for the 5th and 6th. In WA: top 4 scaled scores plus a 10% bonus for Maths Methods/Specialist/LOTE.
Raw mark
The mark before scaling. For NSW HSC, raw marks are different from NESA's reported HSC marks (which are aligned to course standards); raw marks are used in scaling and not reported to students.
Percentile rankP50, P90, etc.
The percentage of the cohort below a given score. P50 = median; P90 = 90th percentile (top 10%); P99 = top 1%.
Candidature
The set of students who took a given subject in a given year. Subject scaling depends on how the candidature performed across all their subjects, not just the subject in question.
Cohort
The full set of Year-12 students in a given year. The ATAR rank is computed against the cohort, including school leavers who did not sit the senior cert.
HSCHigher School Certificate (NSW)
The senior secondary qualification in NSW. Taken in Years 11 and 12. Administered by NESA. Year-12 HSC marks feed into the ATAR via UAC scaling.
VCEVictorian Certificate of Education (VIC)
The senior secondary qualification in Victoria. Year-12 study scores feed into the ATAR via VTAC scaling.
QCEQueensland Certificate of Education (QLD)
The senior secondary qualification in Queensland. Internal Assessment plus external exams produce subject results, scaled by QTAC for the ATAR.
SACESouth Australian Certificate of Education
The senior secondary qualification in SA (and NTCET in NT, using similar rules). SACE Stage 2 subjects feed into the SATAC aggregate for the ATAR.
WACEWestern Australian Certificate of Education
The senior secondary qualification in WA. Year-12 subjects feed into the TISC aggregate for the ATAR, with a 10% bonus on Mathematics Methods, Mathematics Specialist, and Languages.
NESANSW Education Standards Authority
The NSW curriculum body. Publishes HSC syllabuses, sets exam papers, and reports HSC marks.
VCAAVictorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority
The VIC curriculum body. Publishes VCE study designs, sets exams, and reports study scores.
QCAAQueensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority
The QLD curriculum body. Publishes QCE syllabuses and sets external exams.
UACUniversities Admissions Centre
The NSW tertiary admissions centre. Computes the NSW ATAR by scaling raw HSC marks each year. Publishes the annual scaling report.
VTACVictorian Tertiary Admissions Centre
The VIC tertiary admissions centre. Computes the VCE ATAR by scaling VCAA study scores. Publishes the annual scaling report.
QTACQueensland Tertiary Admissions Centre
The QLD tertiary admissions centre. Scales QCE subjects, awards the ATAR. Publishes the annual ATAR Report.
TISCTertiary Institutions Service Centre (WA)
The WA tertiary admissions centre. Computes the WA ATAR. Publishes a 2-page summary scaling sheet annually (much less detailed than UAC / VTAC / QTAC).
SATACSouth Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre
The SA/NT tertiary admissions centre. Publishes the aggregate-to-ATAR conversion table for SACE / NTCET each year.
ACARAAustralian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority
The national curriculum body that publishes the Australian Curriculum (AC v9 since 2022). The AC defines Foundation–Year 10 content; senior secondary is set by state authorities.
Australian Curriculum v9AC v9
The current national curriculum (released 2022) for Foundation–Year 10. Eight learning areas: English, Mathematics, Science, HASS, Health/PE, Languages, Technologies, Arts. Plus the optional Work Studies.
Inter-subject scaling
The technical name for the process QTAC uses to map each QCE subject to a common scale. Conceptually equivalent to UAC and VTAC scaling but with different reporting (raw and scaled percentile distributions per subject).
SACSchool Assessed Coursework (VIC)
VCE Unit 3+4 internal assessment tasks marked by the classroom teacher, moderated externally. Counts toward the study score along with the end-of-year exam.
IAInternal Assessment (QLD)
QCE assessment tasks set and marked at the school but quality-assured by QCAA. Three IAs per Unit 3+4 subject; combine with the external exam for the subject result.
Marking convention
The specific criteria and rubric markers use to award marks on an exam paper. Significant variance between states, courses, and even within a course (e.g., HSC English module markers expect specific structures). Knowing the convention is a major advantage that experienced teacher-tutors bring.
Exam panel
The group of senior teachers who mark a state's external exams. Tutors who have served on an exam panel know what the markers are looking for in detail.
VITVictorian Institute of Teaching
The VIC teacher registration body. A tutor who is VIT-registered has met the formal teaching qualification standards required to teach in Victorian schools.
QCTQueensland College of Teachers
The QLD teacher registration body. Equivalent to VIT for Queensland; same purpose.
TRBWATeacher Registration Board of WA
The WA teacher registration body.
WWCCWorking with Children Check
A criminal-record check required for anyone working with under-18s in Australia. Each state administers its own version (WWCC in NSW/VIC, Blue Card in QLD, etc.). A tutor working with students under 18 should hold a current check; ask to see it.
Tier 1 / Tier 2 / Tier 3 / Tier 4Tutoring.net.au framework
Our four-tier tutor qualification framework: university student, experienced graduate, registered teacher, subject specialist. See by qualification.
Marketplace platform
A tutoring platform where students browse tutors' published profiles and book them (e.g., Superprof, Tutorfinder). Tutors set their own rates; the platform's role is discovery and (sometimes) booking + payment.
Managed platform
A tutoring platform that matches students to tutors and manages the booking, scheduling, lesson plans, and reporting (e.g., Cluey, Tutero, KIS Academics). Higher convenience, higher fees.
