Qualified registered teacher — what they cost
$85–$160/hr typical range. Median around $110/hr.
Who fits this tier
VIT/NSW/QCT-registered teacher with classroom experience (often head-teacher level). Best on syllabus depth, marking conventions, and high-stakes course work.
What you should expect for the rate
- VIT, NESA, QCT (or equivalent state body) registration — verifiable
- Classroom teaching experience: behaviour management, lesson sequencing
- Deep familiarity with state-specific marking conventions
- Usually older / sees tutoring as supplementary income
When this tier is the right choice
Tier 3 makes sense when (a) the subject is heavy on marking convention (e.g., VCE Methods SACs, HSC English essay marking) where a current or recent teacher knows exactly what markers want; (b) the student needs structure and the parent wants a more "official" relationship; (c) the subject has high-stakes coursework where syllabus depth matters more than peer relatability.
Negotiating around the typical rate
- If you're at the bottom of this band: ask about specific qualifications (current uni transcript, recent ATAR for Tier 1; teaching registration number for Tier 3) and trial lessons before committing.
- If you're paying at the top of this band: ask for outcomes — what did their last 3 students achieve in this subject? If they can't tell you, they're charging Tier 4 prices for Tier 2 work.
- Bulk-pack discount: most independent tutors at this tier will discount 5–10% for a 10-lesson term pack paid up front. Worth asking.
