Experienced graduate tutor — what they cost
$65–$95/hr typical range. Median around $80/hr.
Who fits this tier
Multi-year tutoring experience, university graduate (sometimes pursuing teaching qualifications or postgrad). Strong on exam technique and consistent results.
What you should expect for the rate
- 3–7 years of tutoring (or teaching) experience
- Track record of consistent student improvement
- Strong on exam technique, time management, common pitfalls
- Holds the lesson tightly — fewer wasted minutes than a uni-student tutor
When this tier is the right choice
Tier 2 is the sweet spot for most senior secondary tutoring. Experienced enough to drive consistent improvement; cheaper than a registered teacher; usually still student-relatable. If you have one tutor for the whole HSC/VCE run, this is most often the tier that pays back best.
Negotiating around the typical rate
- If you're at the bottom of this band: ask about specific qualifications (current uni transcript, recent ATAR for Tier 1; teaching registration number for Tier 3) and trial lessons before committing.
- If you're paying at the top of this band: ask for outcomes — what did their last 3 students achieve in this subject? If they can't tell you, they're charging Tier 4 prices for Tier 2 work.
- Bulk-pack discount: most independent tutors at this tier will discount 5–10% for a 10-lesson term pack paid up front. Worth asking.
