What this calculator assumes
- Year-round = 40 weeks of tutoring (allows for school holidays + exam-week breaks)
- Tier rates are typical midpoints from our rate intelligence synthesis
- Delivery multiplier: online runs ~9% below the midpoint, in-person ~11% above (combined ~22% gap)
- Term-pack discount: most independent tutors offer 5–10% for 10 lessons paid up front
- Multiple subjects: cost scales linearly (no bulk discount for 2-3 subjects with same tutor)
What this calculator does NOT include
- Short-notice premiums: many tutors charge 30–50% more for <48-hour booking, weekends, or evenings. Budget +10–15% if you anticipate flexible scheduling.
- Travel surcharges on in-person if you live >15 km from the tutor's base
- Cancellation policies: most tutors charge for missed lessons with less than 24-hour notice
- Course materials / books: some tutors include in their rate, others bill separately
Rule of thumb
For a Year-12 ATAR student doing 2 subjects with an experienced graduate tutor at $80/hr, year-round: expect $5,000–$7,000 for the year. For 4 subjects with a registered teacher at $110/hr, year-round: expect $15,000–$18,000. The calculator above narrows this for your specific combination.
