Cluey Learning — honest review

Australia's largest online-only tutoring company. ASX-listed since December 2020. The managed-platform experience is genuinely organised; you pay for the management. Not the cheapest, often not the best — but consistent.

Best for

Parents who want a managed experience — tutor matching, structured lesson cadence, weekly progress reports — without doing the sourcing themselves. Online-only, suits established study habits.

Worst for

Budget-constrained families (cheapest tier still ~$80/hr), students who need in-person tutoring, students who want to choose their specific tutor before booking.

What this platform does well

Cluey is the most operationally consistent platform on the AU market. Lesson cadence is predictable, the LMS-style interface (lesson plans, recordings, parent dashboard) is genuinely better than the alternatives, and the matching process is well-managed for parents who don't want to interview tutors themselves. The fact that it's ASX-listed adds an accountability layer — its annual reports are public, its tutor count and ARPU are disclosed, which is unusual transparency for the AU tutoring market. Cluey's investment in pedagogy is also real; their lesson structure isn't just a Zoom call with a tutor, it's curated lesson plans aligned to the syllabus.

Where it falls down

Cluey is materially more expensive than direct-booking alternatives. The premium covers management overhead (matching, scheduling, lesson plans) — for families who would do that work themselves anyway, it's wasted spend. The tutor pool is also smaller than open marketplaces: if you need a specific niche (e.g., VCE Chinese First Language), Cluey may not have a tutor for you. The lock-in on some packages is real — read the cancellation terms carefully before committing more than a term.

How it compares

Vs Tutero: similar managed-platform model, Tutero is a third cheaper and has a better UX, Cluey has more tutors and a longer track record. Vs Learnmate: Cluey is materially more expensive but takes the matching work off your hands. Vs KIS: KIS is more selective on tutor quality but doesn't have the same operational discipline.

How to use it well, if you choose it

Start with a single-subject, term-length engagement. Use Cluey's matching process — give them specific information about your child's gaps, exam dates, and current marks. Read every lesson plan and recording Cluey provides; the platform's strength is the documentation, so use it. At end of term, review whether the structured cadence justified the premium vs a direct-booking alternative.

Bottom line

Australia's largest online-only tutoring company. ASX-listed since December 2020. The managed-platform experience is genuinely organised; you pay for the management. Not the cheapest, often not the best — but consistent.
